SOPA/PIPA related to Wikileaks?

Today is the official internet blackout day for the protest against SOPA and PIPA.

As you should have already noticed Wikipedia, Google, Reddit, Craigslist, EFF, Mozilla (Firefox), Torrentfreak and many, many more have joined in protest against those USA bills by blocking out their main pages and linking to videos and information about the bills. I will not attempt to explain as there's already enough information and you can learn more from the sites listed or simply googling it :)

But what I do want to discuss here is what is the real reason those bills have come about. Although we would all like to believe the reason is for shutting down websites, advertising networks and payment systems that infringe copyrights but when thinking about the payment systems we remember the very recent and very real attempt to shutdown a site like wikileaks. As you would have heard Visa, Mastercard and Paypal have all stopped supporting the payments that wikileaks was supposed to get from the donations that people would give to wikileaks via those services listed. Because of the services that existed in the US it would appear that the government has enough infolence on those in Visa, Mastercard and paypal to force them to shutdown the support for wikileaks.

In reality Wikileaks had done nothing wrong, they simply tell the truth leaked from within the government departments in the united states that should have been made public in the first place. Of course you probably also heard that anonymous hacking group had managed to retaliate at visa, mastercard and paypal because they feel that free speech should remain free on the internet and not censored. So we see these bills being proposed and supported by the most obvious players of the Hollywood entertainment industry, because of the very vague nature of the language used in those bills which is very heavily criticised by the many opposing companies and people I have a very real suspicion that there's something to do with wikileaks and wikileaks type of websites.

Google's mail, reader new look

Recently Google started rolling out a new look for many of its services, this includes but not limited to: gmail, blogger, docs/spreadsheets, reader (rss), websearch and more. I have to give it to them, this really does look, feel and respond much better with modern browsers from my current experience with this new platform. From my understanding it's css and javascript changes and sometimes back-end changes too but overall I think it's great. The look makes their services appear more consistent, they work mostly faster, and changing up the way things look is not new but certainly entertaining to someone that was staring at the same stuff for a while.

How to embed fonts in ePub after Calibre
This is my simple step by step guide how to embed fonts in epub files after Calibre convertion. For me the most important advantage is that ADE and my reader device finally show readable Cyrillic letters instead of ???.

1. EPUB Output> check: "No default cover"

2. Right click and open .

3. Add the following Serif fonts to the epub file. Fonts are available at C:\Program Files\Calibre2\resources\fonts\liberation:

4) opened files in Notepad++ (using it as an external editor for WinRAR)

3 Trends that Apple (Steve Jobs) Started

1. Portable MP3 player
The first popular product that put Apple on the map of the mainstream media - or technology world was the iPod. The first generation was much simpler than the second, third and fourth etc. naturally but they were certainly not the first MP3 player on the market, so why was their success so much better than their competition? I guess there could be many factors and depending on who you ask it's a different answer - I think it's interface is/was not great and the restriction of the music sucked! but they seemed to have much more space in terms of GB than anyone else and thanks to using hard drive technology, yes that's right and you can actually feel the platter spin up if you have the older ones!
This was the case even up to the 4th generation ipod video which now had a color screen (never before seen) and could play videos (formated to their desire of mp4 of course). Now with the newer touch making the ipod simply an older iPhone minus the phone. ipod touch can install apps and make skype or gmail phone calls (with video whichnNorth America seems slow to adopt) but we still require wifi for that which is no good if you have a data plan. Which brings us to the next trend.

2. Touch Screen Mobile Phones

In the case of the iPhone it started with 2G and went to 3G, later 3GS. S is for speed I guess being a faster processor as it is with the 4 and the new 4S being faster then the last. There were not many phones that had a great touch screen ability before the iPhone and this is where blackberry hoped they would remain key competitor but touch is so simple and fun that it seemed to have cought on and most modern phones have this capability. Android is now a serious competitor as the hardware gets better the OS is also great from the search engine giant Google.
And with this new touch screen technology as it was adopted in iPods it is also made into the larger screen of the tablet bringing us to the next trend.

3. Tablets (touch screen too)

Ah the tablets, this old friend to many designers and artists of all sorts, even laptops with touch screens are not uncommon before the iPad came out. But once the iPad came out suddenly there appeared to double the amount of competition for this market of tablets from HP to Acer all the computer manufacturers started producing direct and indirect (different specs and price ranges) competitors. Of course with new android OS it became clear that Google has something great going on with their software. Remember though that the first iPad was actually lacking many of the new features iPad 2 has such as two cameras (back and front), speed and apps which didn't work well (if you remember other features comment below).

This is why Apple was important in the technology industry, even going back to the first computer - the macintosh which was the competitor to the first PCs, later the mac and macbook to compete with laptops which are in fact very popular with certain people such as designers and DJs seem to have as well.

It's clear that whatever Apple does, the rest of technology companies will follow but the fact that they make the trends does not mean they have the best products for me. In fact I can't wait for the next OS from Google which is supposed to be called Chrome OS but is yet to be made available.

Apple's success is directly related to the marketing of their products and in fact the brand which Steve Jobs helped build. They focus on the non-technical, regular people middle to higher middle class people that would find the ease-of-use and fun factor of the products. But this is where technical people are not benefited from their products and to me, being tech-savvy I find their products lack the flexibly I require and the restrictive nature is always a huge turn down problem that I tend to not like about them and I have never owned any of their products nor will I feel the need to get it. Of course I was always able to use their products when friends and family have them so the ease of use is a plus.

How to find out legitimate website from fake one

I saw someone post a facebook link with timhortonsgiveaway.org and checked it out.
There's nothing phishy about it but it claims to give away $25 gift cards if you share the link on facebook.
How would they know you shared it to even give you the gift card? this got me a little suspicious and I decided to check if it's real by doing the usual investigation as follows.

Step 1: Check the who is records (there's at least hundreds of them - my favourite is who.is)
1. Registrar: eNom, Inc. while timhortons.com appears to be NAMESCOUT CORP
2. Contact Information: WhoisGuard Protected while timhortons.com has the full information [ The TDL Marks Corp. Chris De Jaham and TDL Group Corp Tim Davidson ]

Step 2: Google search

So it's clear there isn't anything about this website anywhere, those links are older and include nothing about it. Trying site:timhortonsgiveaway.org - just add the "site:" has 0 results meaning this site is not yet on google also seeing that it was recently registered from the who is info (Creation Date: 2011-10-15 22:16:31).

Finally a quick check on timhortons.com shows nothing of this deal at all, so either this is a super secret and super recent deal which leaves no trace back to Tim Horton's itself or it's a fake. Most likley the latter but I will update if I see anything new or unusual about it. Leave a comment below if you have any information or if you are indeed from Tim Horton's or even this promotional website to confirm or deny the website claim of giving away $25 gift card.

restart apache and mysql linux

Just had some issues with services stopping in my virtual private server (vps) of godaddy (strange) but those two commands get it up and running again:

apache - http (httpd)
/etc/init.d/httpd restart

mysql (mysqld)
/etc/init.d/mysqld restart

First you must ssh into the server (I prefer putty), second you escalate your privilege with "su" command

If you have any host suggestions leave them in the comments below and I will post here - I require a powerful virtual private server that can match the performance (or outperform) godaddy, that means to have a powerful processor for plenty of requests and queries and at least 100Mb/s up/down connection and 100GB transfer per month should suffice.

Occupy Wall Street (and other cities) Zeitgeist

This is great to see the progress Occupy wall st has achieved in the last few weeks. This finally seems like the people there are awaking and protesting for much more. They understand that corporate greed is what runs this society and they want to make a revolution. This is Zeitgeist in that it is a time of new era and things are changing, but also in connection to the zeitgeist movement in that it is what seeded the beginings of this types of movements. Amazing to see that it's growing all over the US and moving to Canada as well!

Glad this is happaning, and specially now at a time when we see problems are just piling up and we are here to solve them.

I was always sure this will happened after watching the Zeitgeist moving forward movie and now more then ever. One day in the near future things will change to the 99% benefit and there will only be 1% (or hopefully not even that) suffering - unlike the way it is today. This is why there are movements and this is why it's happening.

Makes me very happy that the changes are starting as soon as I expected and there will be a great and positive future in the time we all have left on this planet. One day we can look back in our history books (probably digital) and teach our kids: "the world was once ran by *greed* and *fear*, there was a population of over 6 billion controlled by a few hundred or less people with a huge amount of currency we called money. These people had no souls because they didn't care about suffering and dying or dead people, they only cared for themselves. The rest (99%) of the people were oppressed and human rights were stricken, but they rose up and fought for the world you have today. They may have not had the combined money or perceived power but they had the numbers because everyone was there and this is how we got to where we are now." And we can watch the movie wall street to site the greedy corporations and the famous line: "Greed is good" which is total fiction. Along with the rest of the Free Education our children will be given.

Watching the true democracy unfold before our eyes, because we all know what is now a time of change from the past ways of thinking where inherited billionaires control too much for their own good.

Drive (2011) movie review

First, the movie starts slow but kind of cool, old school cars are shown and the character is wearing gloves. Interesting but very slow moving. Of course there's many movies starting fairly slow and pick up quickly and this movie seems to do it, but then slows down again, and again, and again, to be very, very slow.

I wanted to see this movie because it seemed it would only come out in theaters around Novemeber. The trailer was actually looking very good. And in that I would say it was very misleading. The action in the movie does come in and is very nice, I would compare it to any hollywood action flick in that sense but the slowness between each action sections of the movie simply make it unbearable. Somehow I did end up seeing it to the end and I am surprised by this as I thought I would turn it off, and I even questioned why I didn't but ended up seeing it through (I guess I like to finish things).

I only want to call the slow parts of the movie a huge wast of time, I really wish this 100 minute movie was edited to be 50 minutes, in fact I really want to do this myself and hope to find a nice video editing software and do this (if copyright didn't restrict me this would probably be floating around the internet for anyone to download). I would take out all the slow and non-plot related parts of the movie, and/or speed up the ones that are necessary for understand the rest of the movie. I actually thing with the right editing, and scene tweaking this movie can be great.

There is great potential in many of the scenes and I just wish it could be shortened in those long drawn out silence scenes that are simply not needed.

why I closed my google+ plus account

Of course I was one of the first to hear about Google+ the new social network attempt from the search giant. As with anyone in this field (of internet and technology) I signed u,p and it was very simple, quick and easy since I already love using my gmail account for just about everything; from youtube, hosted sites, web analytics, webmaster tools, search alerts, even this blogger account along with other experimental "labs".

So it was probably under a year and now I am shutting it down completely. Some may say it's too quick others may understand in today's world of fast paced technology innovation it's a proper time to evaluate and now I see this service has no use for me. I am sure when I signed up for Facebook I didn't use it as much and yet I remained on it (beside a brief disabling when I wanted to see what life was like without it again). I also got twitter and didn't use it, in fact I still rarely post I just subscribe to the community and reply or post to either have a global conversation or a more local one. In that sense Google+ has no place in the social network it's like a combination of the two but none because they do exist (facebook and twitter).

And this is why I closed my Google plus account.

So I want to ask you the reader, do you use facebook, twitter and/or google+ and how do you feel they fit into your life together or separately from each other?

Was just checking out the new settings and such that facebook as been developing over time (sometimes making it harder to find what you're looking for but thats for another post) and under the unrelated topic of facebook ads there was a funny notice about a photo rumor: "There is a false rumor circulating that Facebook is changing who owns your private photos. You own all of the content and information you post on Facebook. Learn More"

Zeitgeist possibility

Just had more thoughts about the possibility of zeitgeist and wanted a quick note, summary on the topic of it.
Is it possible? if so then how?

Simply one of two options (or both):

1. The whole system of money needs to collapse on itself, and the only way this would be possible is if people running the show wanted it to collapse. So the issues that occur on a quarterly bases with economies these days are probably because the population is growing and the amount of money is being consumed quicker and saved by more and more people (mostly the greedy ones whom want much more than they need). So since this is probably never going to happen (as we can see from Bush to Obama the bailouts will continue and federal reserves will make more money when the economy needs it = or as they say is running out of it.)

2. The majority or whole of the citizen population turns their thoughts around (wakes up) and decided that money doesn't work for them so they switch it together.

Outside of these two options (or both) I don't see either of those two options happening (not anytime soon at least). So for now we will all live in a greedy, capitalistic way of life and enjoy it while we can.
Clearly this will last long and I don't mean those above options will occur but rather the life of our species will prematurely end probably because of the way we treat the planet, as our playground by "raping and polluting" it like there's no tomorrow.

WinSCP synchronize scripting example

depending on how automated you need this script to be (I need very much to do it daily on it's own) so in my case I created this file example.txt:

option batch abort
option confirm off
open ftp://username:password@ftphost
synchronize local c:\local\path /path/on/server
exit

Now this is the first part for local, so downloading everything new on the server to the local directory, next we have to put either in same file between the synchronize command and exit or I tried in new file example2.txt:

option batch abort
option confirm off
open ftp://username2:password2@ftphost2
synchronize remote c:\local\path /path/on/server2
exit

Getting the same thing to a secondary server with different username and pass of course, this means we are replicating not only locally but also on a second server (for maximum redundant and backup if you have an important application like I do).

And for automation purpose I have a script called ftp.bat with following:

"progs\WinSCP.exe" /script=c:\path\to\example.txt /log=c:\path\to\logs\sftplog.txt
"progs\WinSCP.exe" /script=c:\path\to\example2.txt /log=c:\path\to\logs\sftplog.txt

Finally it's pretty easy to create a scheduled task (instructions will be coming soon if there's demand for this, leave a comment below) simply to point to ftp.bat and start it daily when you wish to do it!

Wikipedia Image filter referendum

Just wanted to throw my two cents to the issue raised by Wikipedia about hiding images. [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image_filter_referendum]

It seems very easy to me, when non-logged in users open an article with images that have been flagged by the community (for whatever reason) and this reason could be shown (i.e. nudity or disturbing image has been hidden) and after it's hidden from distracting the reader, they will have the option to click to view the image anyway. I think this because of the nature of wikipedia it is open and should remain this way, so anyone can view anything at any time, the hiding part sounds interesting because it can also distract from the text in the article which is usually more important at first, images are secondary.

And of course for those logged-in users, can filter and choose which images you want to see or not, but this is not very important to me because I only logging if I want to make important edits. Otherwise for reading and minor edits I don't bother...

Social Engineering - New way of hacking

Social Engineering is the new way of hacking and getting into systems, here's my case.

Got a phone call today at 2:24PM from an unknown caller. They asked for the person's name (whom the number is listed under) I continued to speak as if I am them as they explained that "your computer was generating errors" or messages or something rather "when browsing the internet and downloading..." of course being in this field I know what they are saying is completely bogus but I wanted to find out more about what they doing, suggesting and their intentions and goals (as I always do with phone calls to me).

I asked who are they, where they calling from and what is the problem. They answered (something like) 'windows department' (I don't remember the exact answer), 'New York' and the problem is 'the errors' (or similar answer) in that order. I got somewhat fed up with the lack of information in the answers and said I am a system administrator and what they are saying is bullshit so they said "it's not bullshit" and that was the last I heard from them as they hung up unfortunately. I do regret ending the conversation short and wish I could get more information that would help in future mitigation of such attackers (training my staff accordingly) and ultimately to convict these criminals.

What I wish to have learned:
What exactly they wanted to do and how did they want to do it?
For example; did they want me to download something on my computer to help 'solve the problem'? (probably a virus or other malicious type of software that would most likely log what I have potentially email username/passwords and bank account numbers and passwords, spreading itself to other computers that mine would be in contact with) or did they want to sell me something (which would be like a scam or fraud) or maybe their intention is to have my computer infected from the conversation of let's say download something and then they would offer whatever they sell to fix it.

Whether they are scamming to get into the computer and have control over it or they just want to make a quick buck is still unclear but from the clues I do have they most likely want access directly into my computer since they did identify as a windows department of sorts.

Many questions still unanswered and I still working on making a recording system because I feel recording phone conversations is important these days to both protect myself and also everyone else as I could report them to authorities to help stop such criminal defrauders.

As always give me your opinions, comments and thoughts. If you have encountered such security threats or have ideas as to how to record conversations automatically when answering my phone.

Video host script project php mysql

After the massive popularity of youtube there were many niche video hosts created and so here's my take on it with a friend's idea and my programming skills...the website is called www.ranland.com (defunct) and since we didn't have the funds after getting over 100s of hits/day in first week it went down to a steady 5/day so I decided to put out the source code in hopes that someone will find it useful, as always feel free to improve, remix, re-use!

If there's enough demand may place this on sourceforge and continue development.

Instructions:
-Unzip the contents and upload to your root directory
-modify the db.php with your database info (database info will be added soon)

-if you want twitter status updated when new videos added follow the twitter developer instructions (will be provided later)
-database structure (sql download) provided at the bottom, upload it to your mysql database host

How to use:
To post video go to post.php (no login authentication yet) upload via ftp (no browser upload yet) the flash video (.flv -- no conversion yet) to videos directory, upload the image thumbnail to images directory, past the name of image, name of flash file, add title and description, choose date or leave the existing and click to post the video.

The rest will sort it self and work on it's own, featured goes by latest page, most viewed or popular by most views on individual pages. Share them and enjoy!

There's many features that I would like to have done for this project but the development has been halted as the project came to an end and no further videos have been added, if someone is interested in helping with posting new videos I may continue the development with the following being ideas for new features:
-Add html5 video player support (so videos can be viewed on iDevices-ipod,iphone,etc)
-Add tags and keywords to videos for better SEO
-Ability to upload from browser (now it's only text addition in browser, upload files via FTP)

Print another webpage or image from this page javascript

Pretty simple solution for this I found with slight modifcation.

Place this code with 'otherpage.jpg' as the one you want to print, whether an image or webpage (could even be pdf) and it will prompt for printing when clicked on the button below the code

As you see the first step is to open the page (can be html, pdf, jpg or other image, etc).
Second step (after short wait of 2 seconds) start the print built-in javascript function.
Third and final is to close that window after print or canceled.

Now here's how to trigger the external print:

As you see there is now str instead of direct image or file, this allows the function to take it dynamically from page code, now using your favourite server side language you can generate the files from a database (which is what I do in my case with php):

We all seen these really cool futuristic movies where the character talks to the computer and gets responses with information of various things, whether about something they try to learn or if it's just waking up and hearing the time, weather, news... etc.
Well Sci-fi is really becoming a reality today, everyday something new, and today I discovered something amazing I want to share with everyone reading this blog or just stumbling here somehow or another...

What program can modify hosts file?

I was puzzled to find that one of my favourite torrent sites 'thepiratebay.org' was pointing to localhost. Knowing that hosts file could do this, I looked and found the following under "%SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\" folder/directory which is where host file resides.
It appears the hosts file was modified on 4/22/2011 which was later matched to my installation of a program called blender. Here's what it looked like:

127.0.0.1 www.thepiratebay.org
127.0.0.1 mininova.org

If you are not aware this file should not have any domain names (localhost is accepted) all those domains would be blocked and redirected back to the localhost (127.0.0.1).

Obviously someone or something does't want me to visit those sites, so I started looking through installed programs that may have done it but I'm not sure where to look if you have notes comment below!

I noticed only a few things in 'add or remove programs' last used around this date only shows a program called 'blender' and one called 'Avidemux', could they be involved?

I think it has to do with blender whcih is a "free open source 3D content creation suite, available for all major operating systems under the GNU General Public License"

I find it really strange that a free GNU public license software would do such a thing to modify hosts file and I really hope I am wrong but it looks like this program was installed on that day, I will followup some tests and hope to report this somewhere, somehow (outside this blog)

If you can help in any way, such as testing and reporting that would be great!

Zeitgeist: is it possible?

The simple answer to the questions "is zeitgeist possible?" keeps staring at me every time I deeply think about it and specially talk about it with certain people.

First, for those who don't know what I mean by zeitgeist, as defined by Wikipedia "the spirit of the times" or "the spirit of the age." but I am actually talking about the ideas of both Peter Joseph of which ideas he learned from Jacque Fresco. Anyways all the information is out there and I wrote about it so I hope you know what I'm talking about by now (ask in the comments if you are unclear).

Second, I see that the answer is no and I'll try my best to explain why I don't see it possible in the very near future although plausible and I really do hope it happens, I will help it happen in all the ways possible by me and of course I am a big believer in this Resource Based Economy ideas brought forth by the two I discussed above.

It comes down to a few variables in my opinion that are still far from being solved, there's much more then money at stake for the ones with money and why they would not give it up for anything else in the world, even a better world for them. This would of course mean a better world for everyone else also. They are in control, they feel in control and they really are for the most part. I'm not suggesting that they want to be a dictator like the many violent ones in the past but to be honest it is not much all that different from those dictators that we have seen in history killing millions of innocent people.

You see all people are not made equal. This is a fact. Some people have a much higher drive for certain different things. Others have various things that make them 'tick'. The top one percent is the one that is in certain power, they have been for many years, in fact probably decades or centuries that had power passed down from generation to generation in secret societies.

But there's some people whom only more recently came into 'power', this power is brought forth by the money, ownership or wealth that they acquire(d). There is certain control in our modern societies, the western civilization is run by control, and by no means am I talking about monarchy or socialism of any type, we are not living in a prison state (yet) but it is very similar in the way we have control above us, there are at least 3 levels of police everywhere in north america. this is easy to show as we are all very aware of this: there is local police which is normally the city or town (if it's big enough) then we have the provincial police (yes I'm in Canada) or State police if you live in the US, and finally there's the federal police or national type of police (RCMP for us in Canada).

So you really have to be fully blind to the fact that you are in control. When you shift your thinking your eyes really open (as it did for me recently and why I'm writing this). Of course there's a need for this in THIS society, and in this environment and economy it is very necessary and this is how things run right now, the problem is because they run like this and they are well enough for us this will continue. Let's explore this further and see if you can follow; we have lots of freedoms, they mostly consist of certain choice, the choice to do or not do things and choose between things that sometimes considered good or bad. The police follow the control system, they obey the laws that were set forth by the other entities, they certainly don't make them. being as they are followers, they will blindly obey those laws and their job is to enforce them upon us, the citizens.

We are full of controllers that enforce things upon us as we see above and in real life all the time. And knowing that this form of control would not happen at all in the zeitgeist or RBE system this is probably one of the biggest fears that people will have; if there is no control who will protect them, but you are truly blinded if you think the police protect; in reality you are much better off not having police at all. I'm not suggesting to fend for yourself in the current system but in the RBE based system the ideas that spawn from it are very promising. There will be a much better way to deal with issues, for example rather then cuffing, and imprisoning people we would have intuitions to deal with the problematic people (if there will be such people out there), it is most likely that there will be issues and so the solutions should be based on real science and real psychology and real research instead of what the current system deems as inappropriate, illegal or intolerable for whatever reason they decided these laws which are not based on scientific facts or research or psychology or in fact any research of anything.

The laws are molded to help society remain functional, productive (but in a monetary sense) and meet the bottom line while remaining as civilized as possible to the big medias of the world. They are essentially heartless and just try to have good PR there is no real care in such people, millions will die and they wouldn’t know about it. We can see that by the wars that we wage, let’s not go into any conspiracy we do know for a FACT that people, American and Canadian people, die from these wars in the middle east. This is a true fact and we can see that they have no care in the world to stop these wars in a peaceful and graceful way, because this is still acceptable by the citizens and until there will be a huge uprising there will be no action to change this. Take action and invest your money in changing the way the world works, all controlling civilizations have too much power of the rest of the world, not only their own people and citizens.

Why do you think there are 3 levels of police for YOU? the answer is: It is for YOU, to control YOU. If you get out of line, as we see in the big protests where they harmless people that have no weapons, no protection stand against armed police with full body and head protection, yet they shoot at the people that have nothing. This is happening in our own backyard and we can’t seem to do a damn thing about it. Let’s re-evaluate everything we are used to and change this for a better world we can all enjoy, not just the top one percent or the rest of the 90 percent that either blind on purpose because they don’t want to care and don’t want to think about the way things are or are really too dumb (which I refuse to believe).

Finally I’d like to leave you with a quote but before I find a good one, here’s mine. You need to learn and action what you see with the time and money that you have simply invest it into getting the truth out there, educate your friends and your family get everyone around you to agree that things must change so we can all do it together.

Interview with internet millionaire

My recent friend had a fast found riches that is now in shables and I wondered all these questions (how, why, when etc) about it, after spending some time asking various things I got an interesting picture and maybe some of the readers will find it interesting.

Background:
Male in mid twenties now, dropped out of high school at 16 and became a quick millionaire for a few years [update: he was making only about 100k per year for at least 4 years - never really reaching a million in total but living it up by spending as you will find out], but after the expensive lifestyle the business died (you will find out why below) and now is just a normal guy with interesting story and a few expensive toys (which he has trouble paying for now).

The business was internet website(s) that focus on satellite hacking. Got started by being a vendor of satellite hardware (receiver and/or satellite).

For those unfamiliar (like me) here's how it works: In order to get the satellite service you would need to pay a monthly subscription (along with the hardware cost of the satellite itself and receiver box that connects to your TV), but hacking it became very simple (he described it as easy as sending an email) to circumvent the monthly subscription cost and simply get a free signal.

Bottom line, if you can hack the satellite you can get it for the cost of the hardware itself and there is no need for monthly subscription. The hacking would sometimes have to happen quite often as the system would change things roughly every month, so the users have to come back every month. The business worked on the principle of the traffic of visitors - displaying third party advertising and sponsorships that work with the site directly (find out more from the interview below). Another stream was premium users would pay a smaller fee then monthly cost of satellite subscription and get the hacks faster than regular users which got a delay to create this new stream of revenue (smart).

Back to the story, from the vendor website (selling hardware) he made good but not great money, when a satellite company bought one of the top satellite hacking forums (let's call it X forum) there was another top satellite hacking forum up for sale (lets call it Y forum). Since the X forum seemed to have a bias as it's owned by a satellite company he decided to buy Y forum for the asking price of about 10 thousand dollars cash.

He made several changes to allow for more topics and was able to get the major moderators on board to Y forum from the X forum. When X forum started censoring the topics, discussions and even the spelling name of Y forum. The moderators, top contributers and hackers switched fully to Y forum and of course the regular users followed there to make Y forum a huge success.

Now that the story seems clearer (I hope) here's some more details that I asked him and I formated it into and interview format and paraphrased the answers to make an read:

How did you get started in the website/satellite business?
A high school friend introduced me to satellite hacking (direcTV and free to air), got really obsessed with the stuff, spent days studying it and learned everything about it.

When did you start?
The satellite idea around 2004 and the website in late 2005-2006, made the most around 2007-2008
In late 2008-2009 the hacking was stopped because of the huge investments (millions) the satellite companies spent on security of the system, after that the traffic stopped.

Where did the traffic come from?
Visits mostly North America (USA and Canada). The hacks probably come from South Korea or somewhere in Asia.

How much did the advertising pay?
Thousands from private ads (sponsors) for satellite equipment and thousands more from third party (adbrite, since adsense was running but never paid - it shutdown saying there were invalid clicks) every month.

Where was it hosted?
Malaysia

How much was the hosting?
$1,500/month

Was there other forms of revenue?
Yes, premium accounts that got the hacks faster were paid for by some users, there were also many donations received.

What technology/programming language did it use?
vbulletin - php/mysql forum (not free or open source)

My understanding is the business was run from Hong Kong and funneled the money back through a local one. The expensive lifestyle is not one I would choose with this income but it makes for an interesting story. Leasing an 05/06 Dodge Viper that he still hopes to pay off among other toys, stories and things that shell remain anonymous.

Medical Marijuana for Migraine

After watching a new documentary about Medical use of cannabis, not only did I find yet another documentary about this and all the facts tend to point to the same conclusion; marijuana is great as medicine and should be legalized.

I got inspired to look into a specific treatment for Migraine because it's a topic that is close to me and wanted to get some facts from reliable sources. This is not as discussed in depth on Wikipedia so I decided to check their references and turns out theres quite a bit of research done. This paper reveal another research paper that is full of references throughout the time of the history of usage and treatment specifically for migraine relieve.

the partial lack of soporific power which it possesses as
compared to the opiate, for in certain cases sleep is not always
desirable when pain is to be removed"

There's simply all the facts and research in those papers so the easiest is for me to point you there, so please read and allow for research and if you come to same conclusion as most medical doctors and researches you must also support legalization.

Zeitgeist not stupidity

I came across this BBC documentary called Stupidity (watch) and although I didn't think there would be much new just interesting stuff, I did learn a lot; there has not been much research done on the topic of human stupidity.

This is something that we seriously have to look at much closer, we have to consider why we act the way we do, and what to do about it along with the numerous unanswered questions there is about this topic.

After watching the film I also realized why we don't have things the zeitgeist movement talks about, why we are not implementing ideas from Venus project and in general why so many people agree with human stupidity yet can't really do much about it. The fact is most people are stupid. They rather watch Jackass Movie or read about the new baby Brad and Angelina adopted, or hear some jokes about racism in America, than do something about world hunger, invest and use alternative energy instead of paying billions (not millions) to fund a war in the Middle East for the oil rather then switching to alternative energy as a starting point to stop or at least reduce our dependence on oil.

It's easy to understand why we tend to ignore the faults of our own countries, societies and humanities but ignorance is not bliss when there's so much human potential that is being killed. Humanity is therefore stupid as a whole and although we do have superior intelligence to any other animal on this planet we also have the best technology and knowledge of any other animal but that doesn't make us the best we can be.

I believe we have much more potential then meaningless jobs to make money which allows a small percent of human population to live well, tiny population to live amazing and a huge percent to be poor, hungry and die from war, disease (that we can cure) etc.

Well those are my thoughts, they are backed up by facts.

Boxee - interesting concept, not there yet

I recently found this interesting thing called boxee.tv you can either purchase some pre-installed boxee unit or just install on your computer of choice [Linux, Windows or Mac] (and it's free). I made a login (also free) and tried to use it, I have to say tried because I gave up after about 10 minutes. Install is 40mb, not huge but those of use with bandwidth caps we want to limit unnecessary downloading, specially to watch a few things online... easier to go to a good divx streaming website in my opinion.

Anyway just out of sheer curiosity I had a peak inside this app on my xp box, cool enough if you want to navigate using the mouse only (didn't have to in my case)... a little slow for most video cards and worst of all; doesn't play what you ask!

I tried to watch 'South Park' just cause it seemed to be on top of the list, found some episode I think I haven't seen and... after some waiting... tosh.o comes on! [/facepalm]
Yes some show I never watch comes on instead of what I ask... great job guys. Good effort but that's an F for failure!

I like the ambitious effort and it would be quite nice if it works but the fact is, it's just easier to use a streaming website! the toughest part is installing divx web player, or flash player and watch youtube or something.. certainly better than this.

Sorry for the folks at boxee, I hope you didn't invest too much but unless I'm the only one that thinks this (and I hope so for your sake) but unless the issues are fixed, and there's loads of content that we just can't get elsewhere you will not have the edge, and unfortunately may not even survive.

Zeitgeist First Steps

Assuming you have read my previous posts, or at least understand and agree that the current money system is inherently problematic, the easy answer is yes we need to get rid of money and go toward a resource based economy.

The hard question is how can the entire world turn their heads upside-down overnight?
The answer is no they cannot, and they will not. Change will be slow but sure to come because it's easy to see if you just open your eyes. Things like Wikipedia and Linux were the beginning (decades ago), now we see Wikileaks and the Tunisian and Egyptian protests. We can see changes around the world ARE happening, and I think that's the most important part.

The more complex answer is how will these changes manifest? what direction will they take? and ultimatly we WILL, without a doubt, end the money system. One way or another.

As I said to the stubborn entrepreneur I had conversations with about this topic, it is not a question of 'if' it's more about 'when' and 'how' and we can see some of those answers as well already.

As with the zeitgeist movement they have many good answers and suggestions but they often don't have them all and so I think they should really ask the public (they have 500k people signed up) for more inspiration in their forums.

Motivation or incentives - specifically for complex tasks or problem solving it is proven that monetary rewards are almost never (90% of the time) solved fast, high quality and rewarding (to the person) by money rewards. More conversations and more thoughts have gone on in the past few days and I have taken in more knowledge, here is another documentary along the way that explores how humans exploit resources (tar sands - oil) for monetary gain without any consideration for the precious ones that we really depend on to survive (water) http://www.cbc.ca/documentaries/natureofthings/2011/tippingpoint/

But I hope you have basic understanding by now so will continue to explore a different system.
As a side note one discussion with immigrants from the former soviet union led them to believe that Zeitgeist is a Communistic Idea. After reading up on it, yes it has many similarities but also many exceptions such as politics and money. Also please keep in mind the soviet union was not communist it was socialist with the goal to get to communism which never manifested. Which led me to believe that the soviet union may have never intended to be truly communistic since I know they had many of their own agendas in place and kept many secrets from its people. After seeing the similarities I thought 'maybe communism is not such a bad idea after all...'

More importantly, we really have to remember is to forget about labels and strict ideas or ideals and to simply work out a new system that will solve our problems and it will never be perfect so we will always keep solving new problems as they come along. That's the only way to make a better system for all of us while not destroying what we have left on this planet in terms of resources. All we know now for sure is the current system really is very bad and it must change. And it will change.

Once we can work out a way for all of us to get physical (or physiological) needs such as clean air, clean water, and nutritious food. Second we need to get our safety needs (that doesn't mean surveillant cameras everywhere!) a warm shelter that is comfortable enough. And now we can start solving real problems like how to reduce our wast or resources, energy and consumption in order for everyone to have a chance to live well and also help solve these problems! (there are many of them; how to reduce toxic use, advance technology and all of that without ever worrying about money).

Some of you may have learned it in school as Maslow's hierarchy of needs, at least in my case I learned it in a high school business class of all places. We distinguished from needs and wants. We learned that in order to sell unnecessary products we have to create the need of those products when really they are simply wanted (you will not die without an iphone - literally you need food and water first and after you have it all else is just a 'want'). Anyway we really need to explore the knowledge we have and technology can accelerated the learning and problem solving along with brilient minds that study the fact that reward of money will not make us happy, nor will the money itself. Problem solving for a purpose, say real world issues that are actually useful will!

How to upload over 10-15 minutes on youtube

Have you ever had some long documentary and thought:
How do I post over 10-15 minutes of video on youtube?

Well there are actually two possible answers:
1. Split the video into 15 minute parts.
This could get long process that may be frustrating and technically difficult - I may explore this in another section for those that are interested in the future. Also note that now anyone can post 15 minute videos because the minimum was raised from 10 to fifteen recently.

2. Get on good terms with youtube!

Here's my print screen that shows I am now allowed to post over 15minutes!
But what is my limit? does it mean I'm unlimited? maybe....
More importantly how did I do it? there is no trick, I never contacted them nor did I ever ask for it.
I had many videos (50+) that never infringed on anyone's rights because it was simply me filming some pets and animals (in my backyard or elsewhere) and I presume that because of this 'clean' record with youtube this account was raised and I am now allowed to post videos longer than 15 minutes.

Yey now I can my a documentary of an hour and a half for everyone to watch in one bulk instead of 20 parts :)

Zeitgeist Resource Based Economy

It's amazing from the time I saw the third Zeitgeist film (about 3 days ago) I have been thinking a little more about these ideas but what's more is I was talking about them much more and interestingly enough for all the questions from people although I didn't have the answers right away I was finding them more and more every day.

Looking at all the problems from a money based system we can say, ok this is a problem but how do we fix it? and there are many more in-depth detailed questions about how a new, money free, system will solve these issues without creating new ones. The answers have been popping up right in front of me over and over again so I can't let this opportunity slip and my train of thoughts are showing me that one day not too long from now, maybe no more than a few years, we will live in a much different world and be thankful for this new systems and technologies while remembering back on how we USED to live and be in awe how it stayed like that for so long.

The StoryOfStuff is what came to me first and I saw the clip on the website and saw that I'm certainly not alone in this, someone (Annie Leonard) already done the research and put it out there in this amazing project initiative to tell the the story of where we get our 'stuff'. She explains the linear path of which stuff go through and while watching this right after 'Zeitgeist: moving forward' it was a really easy link to see that money drives the problems of the excessive creation of stuff with toxins and resources are simply being wasted.

After discussing the ideas of RBE(Resource Based Economy) with an entrepreneur the question 'how will people be motivated?' came very quickly and because I always taking things with a grain of salt (including RBE) I had no real good answer but I did explain the concept of Wikipedia which amazingly was new to him. If you are not familiar you have to watch Jimmy Wales videos (founder of Wikipedia) and read about the ideas and how it runs with literally thousands of volunteer editors that do it for simply the joy of doing it and for no monetary gain. Also I went on to explain about open source projects and the free ideas of Linux technology and how it compares and in most cases is much better than a commercial software like Microsoft yet has no corporate offices nor corporate jets as one film put it. But I also had an understanding with the entrepreneur that these people are numbered (even if by the thousands, we compare to the billions living on the planet today) and it takes a certain individual to do something like that (volunteer editing or programing for free).

Today I finally stumbled upon the answer that will truly apply to everyone when it comes to motivation WITHOUT money. I watched in amazement the short interview with Daniel Pink and continued to research about his book 'Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us' and I found a >> ted video << which is really a must to see to understand what is the true motivation in people and how creativity is actually stifled by the motivation of money (proven in countless experiments for over 40 years). So while you watch that video it will discuss a lot about today's business and companies but keep in mind we do live in this world now and that's the problems he is addressing but why not take out the money altogether and now you see that we are simply better off without it!

New Google ad spot in gmail

Noticed this in some emails probably a few weeks ago, just had a chance to take a screen capture and post it here for anyone interested in what google is up to these days.

The new spot shows up in email "conversations" bottom where there used to be nothing. But this is not always there and as you may know you don't always get too many ads so I find it a good fit, it's not disruptive or anything, google knows how to do ads.

First I wanted to review the movie but since it's been done and everyone has their opinions, mine is that I agree with about 90% of the film and their respective opinions.

The facts that are backed up and true are totally worth looking at and because they are facts and not opinions I will not argue anything there, what is still left to opinion is the change from the momentary system to the resource based system.

The part that I still have to disagree is that computers will run everything, sure the sci-fi movies are becoming reality (technology wise) but it will only happened slowly and that's not how we should go about thinking. What we should do instead is focus on how to change over the minds of everyone and that's what I intend to do in this post.

I decided to put together a list of problems around the world, just from my experiences that I think would be solved if we stay away from a monetary system to a different one, say a resource based economy.

1. Copyright
We all know this is supposed to 'protect' rights of copying materials, but who does it protect? the people who 'invent' or 'create' things that unique enough to say that they own the copy rights and no one else can 'copy' it. This topic is important to me because we all know copying is NOT stealing, and it should never be thought of this way. In fact the only cost to copying is the copying itself, and when we have technology that can copy thousands or millions of digital files for free why should anyone, anywhere be charged for it? think about the resource based economy model and understand that knowledge should be, and will be, public one way or another. Wikipedia comes to mind when talking about public knowledge and a great resource like knowledge should never be thought of as a crime for simply reading, listening or watching any type of information. Entrainment or education it should all be public and free.

2. Piracy
Specifically the peer to peer file sharing in this case. Think about the word 'peer to peer' this sounds great, people talking to other people, sharing information, free, and communities are always good. Well guess who doesn't think so? companies who profit by selling those files (movies, music, software, etc) of course again it comes down to money, and back to the topic of copyright it's very much the similar and the same solution, no copyright laws, no problems. Or even better, no money system, no problem.

3. Drugs
Specifically, plants should never ever be considered a trademark (Monsanto comes to mind - they patent genomes or genetically modified seeds of crops that die after one year in order to produce more profit) and they should never be made illegal because if they don't cause harm to anyone there's no reason to do so. How can a plant harm anyone? with education and knowledge like the tribes that pass down information to valuable plans that heal, feed and help us survive there should never be a problem with natural growing plants (for example a weed that has been proven to be medicinal and recreational called cannabis or more commonly known as marijuana should not be outlawed). Again this comes down to money and the more we think about a problem the solution becomes clear, money is the problem therefore get rid of money system = get rid of the problems.

4. Net Neutrality
This is about internet service providers (ISP) throttling (slowing down) internet use of peer to peer communication, the pressure is clearly applied from companies that produce and distribute music, movies and more which is being shared through these means (Bit torrent for example). Although they claim it's in order to conserve bandwidth, we all know that there is more than enough bandwidth to go around and it's increasing as technology get's better. Another fairly recent change is happening here in Canada and some ISPs in the US is the bandwidth capping - we are being limited to a monthly limit of say 60GB per month (both upload and download combined). This is also the same issue as throttling when you look at the big picture, although I have noticed there is much less throttling since if you go over the limit you pay big bucks (between 1 to 5 dollars per Gig!) So their claim is again that it costs them too much but we know it's just not true, again it's a money thing and in a system that shares resources efficiently rather than for monetary gain it will never happened this way.

5. Government
We all know now, and for a long time that Governments are also interested in money, and very much so. How do we see this? because they not only cooperate but they bend over backwards and change their own laws to obied by big-corps in order to get big funds from them! politicians in general that act in the interest of financially successful corporations (aka big corp) are always getting lots of money back in order to have lots of expensive campaigns which in tern help them win more votes with the public. This system is clearly messed up!
Of course some can argue and say that they are power hungry when they go after different nations, but again this power is delivered through the means of money as we know it, so preventing this power is the best way and removing the monetary system for a better resources based system makes a lot more sense.

6. Violence
This is discussed quite a bit in the third Zeitgeist movie (very recommended by the way) from psychological aspects to social aspects so the best way is to discuss some hard facts. From the studies that were presented in the film we know there is no violence in tribal communities that share their resources and really live as a community. But there is a lot of violence in monetary based run cities and countries because one way to get money is by using violence if you take the money factor away why would people use violence? they don't it's a proven fact. This brings to the next point...

7. Theft & robbery
With no money system there would be no theft or robbery. But what will we use? the best products ever made in recent history. This means that now we make the worst things? Yes.

8. Products & services
Right now products are made in a way that is cheapest to produce we all know that but if you don't, think about it you want to pay the LEAST so you have more money left for other things. But if you think about resources we are using them up very quickly with lots of toxic chemicals and it's bad for the environment but as long as we get cheaply made and sold products we pay less this is good for us in the monetary system but that is why we need to change the system. Watch story of stuff it tells it best about the cycle. So consider instead using the best possible materials, the best possible technology and make the best product in the monetary system it would cost a lot but in a resource based system we wouldn't pay we just make them for ourselves and use it endlessly because it should last as long as possible. And everyone can and will use these products because they are made so well there is no reason to have one of each! think of cell phones, how many have you gone through in the last 5 years? my guess is at least 3 (that's what I had) if not much more than that, and the old ones are so useless now they are just junk!
In a resource based system there is no junk, there is only things we give back to the environment like a dead tree decomposing naturally adding nutrients into the soil.
With the current scientific facts we have we can run the plant much better but only if we have the minds of the people first.

Money is The Problem.

I will expend the list as I get more time, maybe go into each topic in their own posts in the future but I hope you get the picture if you're reading this now, and please spread the word to the world about this idea = money is the problem, solution is to get rid of the money system once and for all.

Good Small Business Router

Since I really like the Gargoyle firmware and used it on my WRT54GL I wondered if there was a better quality hardware to use with this firmware to get a better performance and even good enough for small business use.

The answer is yes there is plenty of hardware choice when it comes to this (and many other) open source firmware that matches if not surpasses the quality of competing brands such as snapgear and sonicwall firewalls.

Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH can be widely found (amazon shipped fast) and fairly cheap for the hardware you get. Note you even get a community firmware with the router already (dd-wrt.com) but I preferred the gargoyle firmware for many reasons (easy interface + great features) so I wanted to upgrade it but it turns out you will need to do a few tricks to get it on this one!

There's a choice of two possible ways to upgrade, using tftp (the method I used) and some other command line method. I normally like the command line but these were new commands to me so I tried the TFTP method and after about 30minutes to an hour I got it! Here's my definitive guide to get it:

1. it is recommended that you connect to the router through a switch (or a router with dhcp turned off - turning it into a switch) this is necessary step for me since my NIC will be turned off until the right upgrade moment has passed.

2. once connected through a switch I played with the arp command on my windows xp PC and figured out that the easiest is to simply do arp -a and copy the mac of your router (for this example purposes I will use 00-23-69-25-aa-aa)

3. now you prepare the arp command in this cmd window while opening another cmd window for tftp. arp -s 192.168.11.1 00-23-69-25-aa-aa is your command that you keep queued up we will need this later.

4. download and locate the right file which is named something like gargoyle_[version#]-ar71xx-wzr-hp-g300nh-squashfs-tftp.bin - get it from Gargoyle download site by choosing Atheros AR71XX from "Select Architecture" menu.

5. in the new cmd window prepare the tftp command which will be something like this: tftp -i 192.168.11.1 PUT gargoyle_[version#]-ar71xx-wzr-hp-g300nh-squashfs-tftp.bin
(keep in mind you will either need to move to the directory of download in command prompt or place the file under the default location that you are in.)

6. Finally, unplug the router, plug it back in and execute the arp -s command queued up in step 3, try the tftp command, and again if it was timed out, it worked for me after once failed as you see in the image below but keep in mind there were a lot of playing until this stage so check arp -a if it shows the router as static. Also note I was unable to ping the router even though it uploaded the image so that appears unreliable but once uploaded leave it be for at least 5 minutes to do it's work. Done!

Spell checkers have made many lives easier, whether you are are still learning English or were born in English speaking family and still have some spelling mistakes from time to time. I'm not sure their real origin but I do remember Microsoft Word's spell checker first, then it was Firefox and Google search, finally now it's Google Chrome... kinda.

This issue happened many different times, you spell a word just wrong enough for Google Chromenot to suggest what you need!
But that's not the funny part, Google search will actually give you the exact word you wanted:

Ajax Upload working example

My application is a little different but the principle should work for most situations.

Here is the coolest ajax upload code, it includes multi upload, continues (meaning you can keep uploading with it after one or multiple you can upload again) it has progress-bar and even the amazing drag-and-drop in firefox and chrome browsers (why use any other browser anyway right?)

Anyway the usual instructions are to include this code where you want the upload button to appear:

Keep in mind the id of the div, the javascript to include can be done anywhere at the top header or even before this div.

Now here is where I differ from the author's instructions because of my needs; place this function included ajax javascript files:

xmlHttp.send(null);

<place above line here>

So this setTimeout waits for half a second and loads the function of the upload button and iframes associated all on it's own!

DivX Streaming website evolution

We came a long way from relativly slow bittorrent downloads which cannot be streamed (because the pieces are not downloaded in-order) and I thought this history is worth mentioning somewhere so here is my version of how it came to be with high quality divx/xvid/avi video streaming websites, also a good way to conclude the end of this year 2010.

1st generation:

It all started when DivX, Inc. created what appeared to be an answer to youtube, a competing video host/streaming site called stage6.
An ambitious idea indeed, actually I thought it was great and hopped it would take off and really be something great. I actually think they could have evolved it further the way youtube started working with copyright holders, record label companies and movie production companies/film studios. Anyway as the webpage says "Stage6 Is No More", they opened up the market for other hosting companies to arise on February 28, 2008 [1] and initially they recommended veoh which did mostly flash based video but with their own spyware software would allow downloading divx, that died in popularity with the HQ lovers like me.

2nd generation:

As it happens stage6 search engine sucked and when it came to copyrighted files (be it music videos, movies or shows) they got deleted often when names were obvious so the tech-savvy users renamed them and posted to private community type sites. One of these sites which I liked a lot was joox (still active). When stage6 announced it goes down, or when it actually went down the search for another host has begun and megaupload (also still active, still the best file host) had the biggest file size limits at the time. This was used with joox for some time until it had some issues and was offline for a long time which brings us to 3ed gen...

3ed generation:

A new search has started and there were (and still are) many websites coming up, going down all the time but this focuses on what I liked the most but in this case it was so widely liked that ninjavideo(no longer active) became a household name like MTV or something. They still used megaupload as the host but they had a very special virtual software that was run on java (not to be confused with javascript), once accepted the warning by opening the "ninjavideo helper" normally followed by a version # which means it was activly being developed, this allowed you to stream divx/xvid avi videos in blazing fast speeds. This special embedding was so good that the only way I found out it uses megaupload is by sniffing the packets and looking up the IP addresses, in other words users would never know where they are hosted.
This was honky dory until the domain name was seized by the united states government on grounds of copyright infringing.

4th generation:
This brings us today to icefilms, yet again using megaupload (notice a common denominator?) and being very useful with searching (google's custom search) and organizing which goes by movies, shows, genre, popularity, real release date and by added to the site date they are all very convenient. There are also great features that I enjoy which is page scraping from imdb, linking to imdb and to youtube for trailers (searches youtube!). All this and even great speed at adding videos from forum posting (unlike ninjavideo's judgment ridden forums). Great speed at new releases and also a great decision is to avoid CAM movies which I hated on ninjavdeo.... just cause it's out there doesn't mean I want this low quality video!
This is all possible with a special "ICE Quick Stream" greasemonkey add-on script which takes the megaupload pages and turns them into embedded divx web player type pages. But I still enjoy using the manual streaming with VLC when installing the plugin script isn't a good option.

Overall this forth generation is the best right now, it does worry me a little that it's using a common denominator (megaupload) but we should change our copyright law's anyway and this will not be a huge concern.

YouTube slow on Rogers Internet throttling

So for some time these has not happend but recently made me quite angry so had presed the print screen button and now reporting back on the internet inequality of Rogers, also known as throttling of bandwidth (or something).

Notice the network utilization is very slow to load this youtube video, to prove that it's isolated to youtube we can use the speed test.

Point A is the first attempt, point B is the second, it's between 6 and 10 percent network utilization compared to barely 1 percent with youtube!

[update: it's getting a little faster at times, at least fast enough to keep up with the video...]

Us Now film review and thoughts

I highly recommend seeing it soon as you have a spare hour (and maybe a few minutes to ponder afterwards). While I always knew about collaborating, helping and sharing ideas and work are great in projects such as Wikipedia, Linux and open source software, rideshare and more, I actually never heard of coutchshare, momnet, management of a soccer team (in England) and even amazingly funds and investments through individuals, helping bands get gigs and even albums made by commenting on good tracks and even contributing some money for them to get studio or air time. These examples only scratch the surface of what can, will and IS being done by collaborating, helping and sharing ideas, work and decisions.

These collaboration tools are really amazing when it comes to those individual things described but this can be much more powerful when applied to bigger impact things such as Government spending, policies and so on. There can be many, many useful places to think about collaboration of thoughts, ideas and even work as we see with many, many projects already happening everyday and probably since the dawn of time!

I think this will play a large role in the future of not only our society but dare I say our humanity and civilization as a whole. Sharing our ideas, knowledge and experiences not only makes our life great but it also benefits everyone. The right and qualified people on particular subject matter are always needed but I also think that any average person can have enough experience and knowledge to contribute to those kinds and more of the conversations, topics and help in decision making or simply question things from their perspective. Having devil advocates always proved a good thing in small groups, imagine having the entire world to help in whatever you can imagine!

This is an amazing time to be alive, our human population is large and growing thanks to our technological, medical, chemical, biological and, well, all the topics in the world (and the universe) that we have made serious advances in. This is only possible by our collaboration, sharing our knowledge and learning, experimentation and further observation and advancing our science, engineering and so much more!

The only thing that seems a little lacking is the field of our governing ourselves (and religion but I will not get into that). Most of those ideas are from ancient history and even those things that have been adopted are still very lacking. It's very clear that there will be a new way for us to manage ourselves in the future. True democracy will come when we can accept decisions that a majority agrees on, transparent systems using web technologies that are open and standardized. But I'm sure these will be finally tuned as we grow in the new society.

I think it makes a lot of sense to combine some of the ideas from Future by Design which I reviewed much earlier this year. Although it sounded more like a pipe dream at first, after seeing 'Us Now' it makes much more sense when thinking about resources based economy, together with these sharing technologies that really wire us all together, and help decide collectively as opposed to 'mechanically' as they said in Future by Design or how it is done now and for the past 100s of years, decisions are made by few elitists at the top that, for what ever reason, got there...

When we put our minds together we can accomplish anything, think about how the internet, the truly global network connecting all of humanity together can really take this civilization further and into the future into a much better place for all of us. I think many already agree that so many things are wrong in our civilization (money and government being the top problems), so we really all need this type of system and I think it's not a matter of IF it will be implemented but rather, when and how it will happen.

We all know the saying that two heads are better than one, will in this case we have the entire population (that can access the internet - for now 1 or 2 billion).

how to do a lease take over

Couldn't find the simple step-by-step details so here is what I have so far:

1. Get the credit check application from your leasing company (this is a financial company or manufacturer, ask your dealer if you don't know)
2. Fill the application and send to the company (fax or mail is probably acceptable) = $25 (charged from your usual lease payment method
3. As this happens or before this happens (bear with me as I find out, I will update this step) you need to get your car proof from the provincial ministry (or state organization if in US I assume) to prove the car was not in accidents. = $not sure yet
5. Upon approval I assume the transfer can be done (didn't get this far yet, will update once I do.) = $500 (sent by check from my understanding)

How to change IP address

The real answer (for me at least) is different from the most common tutorials on the net, so here's how to do it successfully if you have a cable modem and possibly some DSL (untested) internet service providers.

1. If you have a router gateway, login to your router (this is done by browsing to http://192.168.1.1, use the default password if you don't know it - google search your router model's default password.)

2. Find the MAC address on your router configuration pages, (if you are wired directly to the internet directly from your computer without a router you will need to do this on the computer instead)

3. Change the MAC address even by one digit and Save/commit your changes.

4. Once the saving is done you may require a restart of the router but your IP should now be changed (check via whatismyip.com or similar websites or on the router itself)

Since every router is very different interfaces, default passwords and configurations this is hard to provide in screenshots or otherwise so the major ideas are here but if you have issues feel free to leave a comment.

MySQL get Query took seconds time taken

Took a bit of time to find this online so here's what I found that works.
This is suppesdly from phpmyadmin (which is where I should've looked) but I was lazy to check there so found it online and worked great!

This is before the query:
list($usec, $sec) = explode(' ',microtime());
$querytime_before = ((float)$usec + (float)$sec);

After the query:
list($usec, $sec) = explode(' ',microtime());
$querytime_after = ((float)$usec + (float)$sec);
$querytime = $querytime_after - $querytime_before;

I use functions so this is how I sent back the value:

the function is called normally for outputing the results as well as the time
$thefunction = thefunction(whaterver);

inside the other loop I used this to collect the total queries time together:
$qtime = $thefunction['qtime']+$qtime;

After that, you can output it at the bottom of the page (or where ever):

Open directory folder via CMD in windows

I had installed the portable xamp version which was great for developing in various places!

Anyway this can apply in many cases but for this case I have to get to inside directory (F:\xamp\xampplite\htdocs\) as you can see it's far inside and takes many clicks, to save time I found a way to get there faster!

Simple: create a text file and type the following:
start xamp\xampplite\htdocs\

Save it as something.bat and place in the root of your flash drive, since they tend to have different drive letters it's best to keep the path relative instead of absolute.

When executed (double click or right click and run) this will open the folder in windows!

Great solution in my opinion, but let me know what you thought (in the comments below)

Been developing a CRM (customer relationship management) calendar software application program (in the cloud which means it's web hosted). The main goal of it is to track and manage appointments with additional components for customer relationship management.

How to use LogMeIn - connecting to remote computers

You will learn how to:

Create a LogMeIn account
Log in to LogMeIn
Access computers with LogMeIn

Follow this this link; Sign up, then go to step 4.

If the link doesn’t work, then follow the following steps.

On a web browser, type http://logmein.com and hit enter.
Click on Create an account (Fig 1).

Fill in your email twice, enter a password twice, choose Canada, and click Create Account. (Your email and that password will be used to login later – so don’t forget what you entered in this section!)

Check your email and follow the instructions in the email to activate your account.

Once it is activated, let me know which email you used to register/login and which computers you need access to.
Once I include your email in the permissions you will receive an email with the invitation to access the remote computers. (fig 4)

Click the link to accept the invitation. Enter you first and last name. (fig 5)

Click Next. Now on the “my computers” page click the down arrow under Profile, and select Secondary user for boris123456@email.com. (fig 6)

Now you will see all the computers that you can log into. Click the computer name if it is online. You will be prompted for a username and password which will be provided by the administrator.
Once logged into the computer, you can remote control it by clicking the “Remote control” button on the left panel.
Click “ok” and “continue” when and if asked while connecting to the computer.

How to record audio mp3 from computer

Thought this might be useful to someone...
If you have audio playing on your computer (even without speakers, just audio drivers installed) you most likely can recoding it. It's really simple!

You will need:

Working audio drivers (if listening to anything works - you have it!)
Audacity

1. make sure your audio works, if you hear any sound from sites like youtube, or even test using the sample music in my music folder, the speakers don't have to be in for this to work. Also check if you see the small speaker icon near the clock.

2. Assuming this works go ahead and install Audacity, once done open it and go to the drop down that will show 'Microphone' (or something else?) choose 'Line in'

3. click the record button (big red circle near the play and pause) if you start playing something with sound (i.e. youtube, music) you should see the audio waves move on it. If not stop, choose the 'Stereo Mix' and try again recoding audio while it's playing. Every computer seems to have a different one that works for it and some have various options so play around until you get which works for you.

4. once done recoding what ever you can click the stop button (square) and now save by clicking file, "Export as MP3" (this may require some other dll but it's not hard to find on google.) name it and your done!

Now you have your mp3 of music from youtube or other places without relaying on third party websites to convert (although there's nothing wrong with them converting it anyway)

WEP wifi hack windows 7

I never found instructions for windows 7 so after 2 days of testing came up with solutions that worked for me, follow these 10 steps and let me know if it works in the comments below.

You will need:

windows 7
wireless card
wep hack pack

Data Gathering
1. Install commview: go to the commview folder in the package and double click setup, follow the install nothing special but once done it will fail saying it's not compatible with vista, ignore that.

2. take the crack file and place it in C:\program files\commviewwifi\ (or program files86 if you have 64 bit windows), it will say something about overwriting accept it.

3. Next right click the file cv.exe and click properties, compatabilities and select windows xp sp3 and run as administrator.

4. run it, now if you can click the play button your drivers work your lucky and can skip to number 7

5. otherwise you can close the program and right click computer, manage. go to Device Manager and find your wireless card that you are using (under network adapters) now right click and Update driver software...

6. Browse, Let me pick, Have Disk, Browse
Locate the pack included and go to NewDrivers, ok it and see if it finds your drivers
If successful open the CV.exe again and you should see the play button highlighted it worked and you can continue

7. click it and select Scan find the network you are targeting and begin the capture
Note make sure to check the logs to autosave and increase the size to 1000Mb and 100mb per log
They will be located under the program files directory of commview, LOGS

Cracking
It can take 4-8 hours of gathering packets (might be less or more depending on how lucky/unlucky you are - took me around 20 hours because of weaker signal strength), once done you can continue to crack the data to gain the passphrase shared wep key:

8. Open the logs with commview, file, export, Tcpdump files (*.cap) save whatever name you like

9. Go to the pack, aircrack, Aircrack-ng GUI.exe, browse to the files, choose 64 (or leave at 128 if determined it) and launch

10. wait for the loading and press 1 and enter, the cracking begins and when done you should get the key.

Note to remove the colons and use just the numbers (maybe letter characters too?)

enter key submits without javascript

What was absolutely mind boggling to me is when my script had input tags that would work just fine when pressing enter, running the javascript and others that wouldn't. To explain further heres the code that was in the input text tags:
onKeyPress="if(event.keyCode == 13){ search() }"

Here you see the event which is equal to enter (when enter is pressed) should run the function of javascript (in this case search which does... you guessed it, search) anyway the problem was it would submit the form in the get method in the simplest way that my website couldn't interpret because it's a little more complex and sends stuff inside files... to the solution!

add this code to the body tag at the top of the pages with this issue:
OnKeyPress="return disableEnterKey(event)"

and add the function to your general javascript or somewhere at the header depending on how you do things:

refresh div html with js

autoplay autostart mp3 music on startup

It was a quick project to setup an 'on hold' music server, but this can be used for countless other projects such as a jukebox or whatever you can think of, get creative :)

Very simple, first you will need VLC, used this for many years now, updates constantly but i'm sure older version can work too.

Second you need a playlist of the music, mp3s or wma etc (most will be played by VLC, that's what it does :)
I had created mine by opening VLC, click on the 'show playlist button' drag and drop all the music into the middle, wait for the processing and click "Media" > "Save playlist to file", named it and I choose the m3u extension.

Third part is the command line, as follows:
"c:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" -Z "c:\mp3\onhold.m3u"

In my case I used -Z to shuffle because I want it to keep going and in a random order, there are many more options found HERE

Create the scheduled tasks to load this playlist on start up:

Control Panel, Scheduled Tasks, right click, new scheduled task, in the properties place the absolute path to this script file or simply the line above in "Run" and under schedule choose "At login" or "At startup", save and now when you reboot this will start!

Note: 1.keep all the files in place, if directories or names change that may affect the music from playing.
2. Once the command is executed you will see VLC start with preloaded settings and playlist songs.
3. You may see the black command prompt window, this can be closed in most cases without lose of music.

How to download mp3

There are many ways to download mp3's these days, simplest and most legal seems to be youtube to mp3 converting, via websites or other tools (record or download).
Record labels have finally realized the great potential of allowing copyrighted songs to be used on youtube, therefore anything that is on youtube can and will be converted to mp3 via the many methods out there.

The simple how-to is as follows:
1. grab the url of the video with song/sounds your interested in downloading mp3 format
2. past it into site such as video2mp3.net and wait for conversion, download will auto start 20 seconds after completion.

As simple as that!

On this note I will conclude that if it's so easy to get the mp3 from youtube, knowing record labels have allowed singles to be put on youtube, they should just drop the act or even attempt at getting money for something that we can get free. But this free can be used to make profit in other ways; for instance the videos that get played also often display adverts which are capital generating in them self. And I think the conventional method of obtaining music in cds, records or otherwise will die out and eventually artists will have to make performances that draw a crowed, such events are the real capital generating for musicians these days.
So the spread of free music can just help to draw such capital from concert events and advertising power for other products.

All I know is that the entertainment industry is digitizing and with this change so will the profit generating methods will change and they should just accept and embrace the change to find new ways of making money instead of trying to reinforce the old conventional methods that will no longer work today.

How to open files with applications

To make things simple you must get familiar with the properties of files, a file is simply anything that is not a folder (folders are yellow folder icons in microsoft windows operating systems), anyway i'll assume you know this part and move to the fun part:

Phishing attacks

I have been recently witnessing a lot of phishing attacks, in particular email messages from what appears to be legitimate sites such as banks and classified types of sites etc. showing links with correct text but href pointing to phishing sites which often hosted on free or even paid hosts.

how to spot phishing attacks you ask?
sometimes it's simpler then others but exercise common sense and caution when receiving emails that you are not expecting to arrive, and even those you expect, inspect them carefully.

I have several examples but it may be safer not to post them for now.

Neuro Programmer (Formally known as neural noise synthesizer) is a cool program that was has audio clips to help do various tasks. For example there are audio clips ranging from 10 to 50 minutes to help fall a sleep faster, get motivated, get energized, concentrate to be creative, learn or prepare for tests, etc.

Once installed you have a trial for 15 days at which point your required to buy a license.

I'm experimenting with various clips to see if they work, so far the sleep thing didn't work for me but it has in the past.

PHP never expire vs timeout cookies vs sessions

As mentioned earlier I have a newly found hobby with PHP MySQL programming, and after lots of trial and error in the development of this project I found a working method for a 'remember me' button and the expiring cookies and sessions.

The first part is login script, here you will determine if they want to be remembered in our terms this means to never time out the user. This is done with simple cookie to set the expiration a week from now, here is my code:

Notice that the username cookie is still with a long expiration, the expire cookie is in control of expiration and the username just saves the username data which is required in various places to determine access and such.

After the login page you will need a function that is called every time something is requested, (in order not to annoy the users and only time out after inactivity) this can look something like this:

Ultimate FTP/SFTP text editor winSCP

Today's cloud computing put to the max by my newly found hobby of coding in PHP/MySQL and JavaScript (plus a little CSS) but it was only made more enjoyable when I found the great way to edit the code visually.

So I thought to share it with the loyal eduboris blog followers!

First component is the FTP/SFTP, the free and open source windows application I found is WinSCP
Second is the editing, while the default editor is OK for quick fixes it definitely is not something you can use to code, so for many years now I used Notepad++.

To combine the two and have a truly cloud computing coding environment go to WinSCP (while logged in) Options>Preferences>Editor>select the first one and click Edit> choose external editor and browser to your Program files and find notepad++ directory, and executable (if you installed it, otherwise go to the extracted folder)

From here on in consider your ultimate sftp text editor setup and ready to use!
The features I really like about Notepad++ are:

Default language detection with color coding
Default line count and word wrap
Great stability under huge files (6k+ lines)

IE8 block sites how-to

After some review of IE security and noticed a flaw (read more) I needed to block users from all sites except those allowed. I used the IE content advisor and GPO to do this.

The first step is to create a septate group policy object or use a common one with other IE changes to help in the organization.

Once you have your group policy object editor open navigate to "User Configuration" > "Windows Settings" > "Internet Explorer Management" > "Security" and open "Security Zones and Content Ratings".

Click the radio button "Import the current content rating settings".

In the Content Advisor window click the Approved Sites tab there you will add the domains, sub-domains or IPs you approve or disapprove of and this will affect users that this policy applies to (it seems to also affect the server).

IE8 lockdown report

This is not a flaw with Internet Explorer at all, the flaw was in the security theory. Even though I had sites blocked before locking IE, I decided to lift the block after removing the address bar which I thought was the only way to get to other sites... this was not the case and I was so intrigued by this one that had to write a little report about it.

After locking IE and the entire user profile down I was convinced that users cannot go to any other sites than those we intended, i.e. the home page and links on desktop and without an address bar they couldn't get anywhere else. What never even crossed my mind and I had not thought of, is that one of our links' webpages was leading to google maps to show an address, seems harmless enough but from there the user can simply click on the web search and google anything and get to where they want! (assuming it does shows up on google of course - at least there will be no malicious sites)

The solution is another group policy object to only allow IE to get to sites we decided (read post), can include google too but if they try getting to another site it will be blocked.

So there you have it folks, even with security in mind you cannot always think, see or find the flaws in your system until it is used in production with real users daily tasks and them trying to exploit the system. In this case: with no address bar it is still possible to get to any site you want via search engine if it's linked ANYWHERE.

How to Download and Stream from MegaUpload

It's really quite simple, note you will need VLC installed and either Firefox or Chrome as your browser.

Watch the video and read instructions below:

1. [Update: this part is now skipped by megaupload: start from step two, I will keep it for archive purposes] First you are going to get to a download page, enter the code and hit download file
(Example: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=EBRH99AC)

2. Next you wait for the counter which will take 45 seconds without an account or 25 with an account (sign up is free).

3. Now you simply click Regular Download image button and the download starts! (you may close the window but don't close the browser so the download can finish)

4. If the file is avi/divx type (extension doesn't always matter), streaming will work with VLC and firefox/chrome, go to the download location (normally at My Documents>Downloads) Right click the file (which will be named appropriately, in firefox the extension is .part and as of 10/22/2010 chrome changes the extension to .crdownload) > and click Play with VLC media player (if the option you may need to restart or reinstall VLC player)

5. VLC will give the message "AVI is broken..." (it's because the file is incomplete, because it's in the process of download!) just click Don't Repair and the streaming video will start!

Note: depending on your connection (and other factors), VLC might stop playing - check if something interrupted the download (remember not to close the browser!) or just slow download speed, just wait a few minutes and repeat step 5. again. If it's too slow you may just prefer to wait until the download is complete.

After giving it some time and waiting to see if the site comes back up I am pronouncing it dead today, here is a last gimps at the wonderful site before it disappears from the cache (no longer there)

It made us cry, it made us smile but now we look forward to the next pirate streaming site that will provide us with mindless entertainment for countless hours and chew more bandwidth then our ISPs can swallow .

We loved it for so many reasons.

Pop culture and underground mashed up into one, a place like this is truly unique and let's hope the other sites can handle it, but the real question is when will the feds stop taking down those sites?

Maybe one day we will figure it out... until then, ROCK ON pirates!

redirect http to https multiple domains

After the torture of trial and error I have devised a working .htaccess way to redirect http to https while having multiple domains, follow the steps below.

First task is to have the /secure directory secure with https, in this directory create the .htaccess and place this text:

RewriteEngine on

RewriteCond %{http_host} secure.domain.ca [or]

RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off

RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://domain.ca/secure [L,R=301]

You can place this anywhere else that you want redirected (i.e other domains), basically users will try hitting the http and redirect to that domain with https!

Second is having the / domain not secure (if your certificate isn't *. users will get a warning, we don't want that), and it will have different subdomain in this example (www1). In the root directory place this in .htaccess:

RewriteEngine on

RewriteCond %{http_host} ^domain.ca [or]

RewriteCond %{http_host} ^www.domain.ca [NC]

RewriteRule (.*) http://www1.domain.ca/

how to stream movies videos ninjavideo

In particular, this will fix the issues some videos are having. For example the sound is off and the picture seems incorrect, also if you hit the 'download' button but want to stream (watch the movie without having to wait for the download to complete).

What you will need is VLC player (of course to work with ninjavideo you need java and older version of divx installed [firefox or chrome is also recommended]).

The simple version: go to My Documents/My Videos in XP or Videos in 7 or Vista (%userprofile%/My Documents/My videos/ or where your directory is located). Navigate to DivX Movies\Temporary Downloaded Files/ and find the movie or video that you want to watch. It will have .part extension simply open this with VLC and hit "Don't repair" if prompted, now you are watching the streaming movie in VLC instead of DIVX!

If you are downloading the movie via the download button, use firefox as it will not work with other browsers I tried. Find the .part file where you are saving the file (Desktop or My Documents/Downloads) and play it with VLC.

Make .part files open with VLC by default for ease of use.

It's easy to find the switches here but not so easy to find working examples.

Following up on the previous post(s) to schedule a tasks use this example:

Took me some time to find the right components, finally got it to work and this will help me a lot!

The dependencies are:
1. The mail program, best one (or only one) I found is HERE (more info and alternate download), get the one with STARTTLS (if using gmail), I saved it under %systemroot%\system32 and renamed to mail.exe for ease of use but you can leave the name (change in script) and place in same folder as script if there are security concerns.

2. Sleep command found HERE.

This is surprisingly, very simple to do, you will need:

Firefox or Chrome
VLC

I will assume these are installed with fairly default settings and that you have a working video link to megaupload (example).

You can go ahead and type the code, wait for 20-40 seconds and click download.
Once the the download starts navigate to your download folder (normally in My Documents\Downloads)
There, you will see the filename of what you are downloading, using firefox it will be an empty file but *filename*.part can be played with VLC, if using chrome you can play the normal filename with VLC!

If you are unfamiliar with how to open in VLC:

-Right click the *.part file > Properties > under Opens with click Change
-Find and select VLC media player > click OK and again OK.
-Now simply double click the file and you can start watching the video/movie!

Many already know the prohibition continues in the USA and majority of other countries... here is a more recent look at what is going on in California: How Weed Won the West part 1 and part 2

Although President Obama promised to allow marijuana to be categories as conventional medicine, and allow state law take presidency over federal law, the raids continue. DEA take the crops, cash and trash the place from further business while the economy suffers - it seems the two just cannot be linked. Governor Schwarzenegger also agree in 2009 that the deficit is so large marijuana taxation will enable to keep schools open and violent prisons in jail.

This is so clear to so many yet it feels nothing can be done, maybe the few that benefit are more powerful than the many that suffer and so life carries on being the way it was...

Why not to use wireless keyboards

It seems like everyone has those cool wireless keyboards, but in the security world we explore everything and guess what has a weak encryption and can be hacked?

Of course it's the topic of this post...

Anyway I just thought it was important to get the word out there and inform the citizens of another security threat.

The device is not (yet) for sale but can be made by anyone with some soldering skills, once made it can reach 75 meters and the software is open source downloadable but probably will require some learning or even experience with Linux/Unix.

Needless to say this is not only dangerous of eavesdropping on peoples conversations but passwords, credit cards and whatever else is being typed on those wireless keyboards of sensitive nature - can all be picked up over the air waves by soon-to-be-sold device and free software already available... [see bottom]

Common wireless keyboard manufacturers (Microsoft and Logitech come to mind) don't give users a fauls sense of security when it's clear those are insecure!

Also you should probably work on a better encryption, try getting some help from those who hacked your keyboards for starters....

Wake on LAN command line script

Automate the Wake On LAN (WoL) by scripting a small but smart script.

First, make sure your hosts can wake on LAN, you may have to check the bios but also make sure to enable wake function from windows, test that it works with the WOL GUI if you'd like and move to the next step when it works.

Second, download the wolcommand from here, I like to place it in C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder so it can be accessed from anywhere in the local system but you can place it in the same folder as the script which makes this command a dependency for the script.

Third step is the scripting portion, as described at the bottom of enable WoL in windows save all the MACs if there are multiple hosts you want to wake up, in my case the list is as follows:

pc00: 00-07-E9-xx-xx-xx

pc01: 00-07-aa-aa-aa-aa

pc02: 00-07-bb-bb-bb-bb

Place as many MACs as needed in this text file, we named it ip-mac.txt but you can name it anything else and have any other delimiter but make sure to edit the script below accordingly if you do have changes.

Now the fun part:

FOR /F "tokens=2 delims=:" %%G IN (ip-mac.txt) DO wolcmd %%G 192.168.1.255 255.255.255.255

Named it wol.bat (or anything you like) and run or schedule with at command or The first line is a FOR loop that takes the second field with colon delimiter (:) then execute "wolcmd " with each of the MAC address lines, it may help to learn more about FOR loops to understand this for your case.

Second line is a pause which will wait for user input any key, I just want to make sure the commands were successful otherwise the command window closes before you blink.

Anyway, this seems to work with most PCs, I am also considering placing a sleep few seconds between each MAC wake execution to give the packets time to leave before sending the next.

Enable Wake On LAN Windows XP

In order to wake the computer from the Local Area Network you may need to check the BIOS to allow this but since there are too many different ones I will cover the Windows XP enabling (same with server 2003 and similar to older and newer versions of windows operating systems).
On your PCs Network Interface Cards (NICs) you require to "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby", and here is how to do it:

1. First locate the Local Area Network properties, normally can be found in Control Panel > Network Connections (Fig. 1) double-click your network connection to get to the Status

2. Next in Status click Properties:

3. Now in the Properties click Configure:

4. Now click the "Power Management" tab and select the check-boxes with the wake on LAN capabilities.

Since with the Intel drivers this section looks different for me, here is a more common look for this tab:

You will need to check the bottom two boxes and click OK until there are no more open.
And this will -in theory- allow you to bring the computer from a turned off or standby/hibernate state to a powered on and running state.

There are various ways of doing this: Make sure to record the MAC Address found in Support > Details of Fig. 2

Press Ctrl+c to copy these details and past them into a noetpad text file and save it for future references.

Next, there are many routers that have the capability to wake the computer's by MAC, either by default firmware or upgraded, in any case I prefer the software on a server in the LAN, so the while the rest of the computers sleep the server can be scheduled to wake them up via the WOL software which can be scripted in my next post.

How to drive a manual / standard shift gear car

Update: Since I wrote this I have learned quite a bit more about how to drive better, smoother and feel like an automatic car to your passengers and compiled some tips:

#1 my main mistake was not staying in gear long enough, this feels slow and depending on your car power you may need to play with your situation but in my car I found staying until 3 or 3.5 thousand RPM (revolutions per minute) was optimal - unless of course you're in traffic when you don't need that much power and the driving style changes. So this helps avoid the jerk feeling or slowing down when specially when shifting to the second gear since you need more power to get moving and the car is not yet moving fast, stay with the gas until you reach 3,500 RPM and when you plateau on the accelerating you can clutch, let go of gas, shift to second and slowly+smoothly engage the clutch. Same idea for the rest of the gears depending how fast you need to go (street or highway).

#2 when reversing, or rather when sliding the gear into reverse make sure the car is not moving (even a little) because in my car's design it will not allow the gear to enter R if the car is moving even slightly in any direction. First gear will let you slide in as long as your gown <15km/h, also while we are on the reverse topic, the clutch engages a little faster and unless you plan to go far in reverse you probably won't let the clutch out fully. I end up reeving a little and slowly engaging until I get far enough and can go forward.

A long awaited journey on the learning curve of the manual/ standard shift gear car has began two weeks ago and I wanted to report back on the educational (edu blog) experience.

First, how to get things started, 5 gears and reverse, clutch on the left, break in the middle and gas on the right as usual. The clutch is the most important piece because it is the most used and toughest part in my opinion.

Second, to get moving, clutch has to be all the way down to the floor, start the engine and slide the gear in place.

Now you can press the break and release the hand break (all the while keep the clutch all the way down).
Once in gear and ready (first or reverse - depending where your going) you need to release the clutch very very slowly, this is important, releasing too far will stall the engine. Centimeter by centimeter you release the clutch very small movement of the pedal until you feel the car moving in the direction, or you see the revs get lower but don't let them drop any further without giving gas, because again this is where the engine will stall.

This is the most critical point of driving manual cars, getting from 0 is the toughest in my experience and I'm sure for many others. But from people's instructions and even tutorials on the net (even youtube videos) I noticed the teaching doesn't get me where I am going, anywhere.

So, again, keep the break on, clutch all the way down, release very very slowly until you feel some movement, practice this until you find the 'grip point' of the clutch - where it engages the gear to the wheels.

You don't have to know the mechanics but it helps, once you feel the engagement of the clutch, keep it there and start applying the gas - slowly as well, you don't want to rip it now!

Put the revs above 1, at 1.5 should be sufficient for most cars, at this point the car shouldn't even roll back if you are on a hill, so we solved that problem as well.

Now continue releasing the clutch - still very slowly or the car will jerk, until your left foot is completely off the clutch and now you are moving!

Step three, changing the gears: this one is often overlooked as the getting started part seems tough enough.
Well, from my experience you still need to be very smooth with the clutch in order to not make your passengers seasick, and of course avoid hardware problems in your car mechanics.

Okay, so your at 2.5-3 thousand RPMs of the first gear, you need to switch. Press down the clutch - all the way to the floor and this doesn't have to be smooth, actually best to do this fast [edit: easing off the gas should be smooth as to not launching your passenger forward]. Keeping the clutch down you switch the gear from first to second and now comes the clutch re-engagement part. Don't drop it or else you will jerk the car!

Release the clutch about half way until the engaging point and now smooth out the clutch at a slower release while reapplying the gas, smoothly. Keep in second gear for another 20KM/H or 2.5-3 thousand RPMs again until switching to third, fourth and fifth (unless you have a sixth). From there it is mostly smooth sailing.

Slowing down: down-shifting should still be done smoothly as described above, clutch release is the challenge as always and in this case we can't re apply the gas (unless your using heal-tow maneuver) so you need to get the right gear for what's going to happen next, predicting isn't tough in driving since you know you will need to accelerate after you get past a turn, therefore dropping the gear to second or third, or simply neutral if your coming to a stop (don't down shift to first unless your speed is below 20km/h)

Coming to a stop you should clutch again but don't put in first gear until you are ready to reengage, no explanation for this, just how it is. In other words until you reach 0-10 you should not switch to first gear.

Turning, most of us turn at 30-40KM/H which should put you at 3-4th gears is what I found from experience.

Stop and go traffic will probably put you at 1,2 and sometimes 3ed gears, clutching and if you're like me, using the neutral so my left foot can rest (release the clutch on Neutral).

MySQL backup script on windows cmd

Just needed to create a windows backup script so thought I would share my findings:

You can download the MySQLBackupScript.zip (1816k) if you're ready to use it or just view the script, otherwise proceed to the explanation.

Dependencies: don't forget you will need mysql.exe and mysqldump.exe which can be obtained from the mysql website and are also provided in the zipped file download link above.

First we use @echo off to hide the commands executed and only display the text after the "echo" command.
Next, I display a message to deter the user from closing the window (since this stops the script) because I need it in my case - it pops up from the scheduled tasks and might be used at the time so it must be clear to the user to not get closed - but you can change this how ever needed, even no output text is possible by avoiding all the echo commands in the script provided.

Now to the meat of the script, the mysql commands;
mysqldump syntax is
mysqldump -uusername -ppassword -hhost.com databasename > backupfile

mysql syntax is
mysql -uusername2 -ppassword2 -hhost2.com databasename2 < backupfile Using the %date:~7,2%-%date:~4,2%-%date:~10,4% command will produce a day-month-year to help distinguish the backups (i.e. backup19-02-2010.sql as formatted in the script). Finally, schedule a task on the machine that will be doing this by going to control panel > scheduled tasks > right click > new > name it and go to properties, find the script location and set the schedule.

This will effectively place a backup on the system the script is in, and upload to the server of host2.com (example shown above), you may of course add as many servers to upload the backups to, simply repeat the line with mysql and change the settings as needed, you can also add the "pause" command if you wish to wait until user interaction to continue the script.

how to move torrent files

I've always wondered how to move a torrent file, the actually final downloaded file that is, not the torrent file (Or magnet link) which helped download.

The main reason to do is, well, to avoid clutter. If I have music, videos, ebooks, software and the list goes on - all of this in the same folder called Downloads... well you can see how this could be a problem.

And most operating systems provide a video, music and document folders already so to make full use of these (My videos, My music in Windows XP) or others how do we move the torrent-downloaded files without removing it from the torrent application or causing a file missing type error?

simple in utorrent:
1. Stop the download/seed. Press the red square or right click stop.

2. Move the file/folders as needed in the directory.
I like to use the "drag and drop" feature of windows.

3. Right click the torrent in uTorrent > Advanced > Set Download Location...

4. Browse to the new location... and Save

NOTE: you may have to "Force Re-check" in order to verify the files and hashes...

You can now resume the download or just continue seeding if it's done :)

Strange Network Activity

[Update] The issue seems to have been cause by a cheap or just bad switch (it was cheap so I assume that's why), after it seemed to be dead I tested it and the same thing happened in the lab!

Recently I have noticed a strange network activity in a workstation PC. It is an older IBM model running Windows XP, the issue has not occoured to me until I opened the Local Area Connection Status window and saw the amount of sent packets under the Activity section (figure 1)

There are probably several possible causes but right now it seems to boil down to a bad connection on the wire or connectors. I have re-installed windows since I have noticed this originally, I also don't remember this PC having issues before it has been moved to the current location but the 'problem' keeps coming back.

The strange thing about this is that the group policies get affected every now and than.

It doesn't seem to have any issues with internet, application, bandwidth or any of the other network components including itself so not a big issue, I guess "if it ain't broke don't fix it"?

But anyway, if anyone has any ideas let me know.

Future by Design Review

After I watched the documentary called "Future by design" I had to mention that while it is a great documentary and very recommended to everyone, it brought many new unanswered questions and ideas to mind. (IMDB, torrent download)

First, I think that Jacque Fresco is a genius. No doubt he finally has shown us the way, I always thought money is a strange concept but never knew how it could be different, and what is possible in a different economy and his imagination of the future is really brought to life in this film. My only criticism is that his thinking and designs that are just too far ahead of our current or near-future reach. While he has amazing ideas with incredible details to his designs and inventions, I feel that we need to focus on the more immediate transitional ideas and the bigger picture that are not covered very much in this documentary.
For example: how do we start?

We really cannot start rebuilding for future cities like he discussed, nor can we build futuristic cities from the ground or in the water. What we can and should do is discuss the type of details that get us out of a monetary based system, unite the world's countries and share resources. Improving education and removing any money related ideas. The list of jobs and ideas that are completely unnecessary is going to be huge so I will not list it here but I hope you get the idea.

Another video on the other hand, does much more in-depth coverage of these ideas is: The Zeitgeist Movement: Orientation Presentation. Similar to ZEITGEIST: ADDENDUM (Also by Peter Joseph), but I felt it is more concise and to the point, with in-your-face fact driven and solutions laid-out type which might not appeal to some. Nevertheless I highly recommend watching this (link above) - and as with everything - you may take it with a 'grain of salt', but I found this very eye opening and in general a topic which is in need of many more and much more open discussions of these ideas.

The very true facts I take from these videos are: with no monetary system there would be no drive for immoral or negative 'criminal' acts. If we re-think the way things work in our world we should be able to improve the global and personal quality of life. If education systems are modified and technology improved for the greater good instead of profit, I believe that our potential is limitless.

So assuming you are as convinced as I am that we need a change in our economic worldwide systems, I keep hitting myself with the same question:
How can we change from the monetary system?

A possible answer is:
If the people in the highest powers are comfortable they will never agree to any change, therefore this must happened from the people that are uncomfortable. But will this be a very fast abrupt change or will it take several discussions to the possible solutions to change to?

As you can see there are many questions and I think that now with an open mind we must ask and discuss these ideas.

Truly I feel the "Resource based economy" idea sounds great in theory there are many more important details that are not covered. Going back to ideas of "Future by Design" it is impossible to assume as Jacque did that all the mundane jobs are automated because that just sounds too far into the future.

So there are many questions that have to be thoroughly discussed and thought out but what we need to do is start thinking what steps can be taken NOW toward a real change in the SYSTEM.

Today's facts as I see them are:
The monetary economy is wholly flawed, motivation for profit creates unrealistically huge amounts of immoral acts, to list a few;
cruelty, crime of murder, theft, and simply things that are wrong by any standard are all done by individuals and groups of individuals (also known as organizations, companies or corporations) for the single most important goal of this economy is MONEY.

There are constant roller coaster of inflation and deflation in value of currencies and more problems I may not be able to think of right now... but all of this is simply unacceptable.

It is unproductive to our technological and academic growth.

The solutions sound simple: remove the monetary system to an education and resource based system but how do we get there from where we are now?

So please I ask of everyone reading this, if you got this far I hope you have some ideas of your own at this point so share them with me or anyone around you.

BackTrack 4 Released!

Recently backtrack version 4 final was released, I would like to take that opportunity to try the USB live install this time instead of the DVD or hard drive like I have done before with the pre-release and previous version.

I am currently downloading it via torrent in order to conserve bandwidth for them and reduce their server load (it seems they have been getting a lot of downloads when they released) but also because I like to stick it to the man and my ISP finally stopped throttling... or maybe it's the protocol encryption utorrent employs.

I'm liking what I saw in the pre-release and I like that they finally got a new website, can't wait to install and start hacking!

ZEITGEIST: ADDENDUM review

After watching "ZEITGEIST: THE MOVIE" [RELEASED 6/25/07] by Peter Joseph, I felt that although the documentary is well made, the first part spoke strongly to me but the second part of the documentary was not very close to home in a sense of what I could relate to and the understand or believing the facts presented.

And it is very interesting to consider but the truth is we will never know what happened because they can hide it too well, and what is more important becomes apperent in his second documentary: "ZEITGEIST: ADDENDUM" [RELEASED 10/02/08] from Peter Joseph. This truly inspired me to look further into the future and how things would play out if we lived in a different system - not a monetary based but a resource based economy.

The goals and motivations would shift from the endless and useless money, currently humans are trying to obtain as much money as possible (why? money isn't real anyway!), our goal of making things better for everyone will include ourselves. The rewards will speak for themselves.
